How numbers are allotted and kept

  • A number is allotted automatically when a publication goes live with its full publication date. Nobody types it in.
  • Each year has one running series for all publication types, starting at 00010 and rising by one (00010, 00011, 00012).
  • The year, month and serial never change. If an online publication is later printed, O becomes OP and the earlier form still opens the same record.
  • A revised and updated publication keeps its number and adds the version (v2, v3).
  • A withdrawn, archived or retracted publication keeps its number, shown with its status. A number is never given to another work.
  • The check character at the end lets anyone confirm that a number has been copied correctly.
