BAPI functions as an independent national research, innovation, knowledge and capacity-building institution, advancing research and professional excellence across critical infrastructure, strategic manufacturing, supply chain resilience, logistics, national resilience, industrial continuity, emerging technologies, governance and related interdisciplinary domains. Its research ecosystem rests on three complementary pillars.
Each ecosystem operates independently while remaining interconnected, to promote multidisciplinary research, knowledge exchange, innovation, policy development, technology transfer, professional capacity building, and national and international collaboration. All three serve the Institute’s six core research verticals and its twelve National Mission Centres.
Intent statementThe BAPI Independent Research Ecosystem is established to undertake original, applied, strategic, interdisciplinary and translational research under the institutional research programmes, centres, laboratories and initiatives of BAPI. It provides opportunities for researchers, scholars, professionals, practitioners, innovators and domain experts to contribute independently to research, publications, standards development, policy recommendations, technology solutions and knowledge creation without necessarily being enrolled in a university degree programme.
Intent statementThe BAPI Research Mentorship & Guidance Ecosystem is established to provide academic, scientific, technological, industrial, policy and professional guidance to researchers, fellows, project teams, innovation groups, collaborative scholars and institutional research programmes. The ecosystem promotes high-quality research through structured mentoring, interdisciplinary guidance, ethical oversight, methodology support, publication assistance and strategic leadership.
Where permitted by applicable regulations and institutional agreements, BAPI mentors may also serve as co-supervisors, advisory committee members, industry mentors or domain experts for research scholars registered with universities and other recognised institutions.
* Doctoral roles are exercised with, and under the regulations of, the university or institution where the scholar is registered. BAPI does not itself award research degrees.
Intent statementThe BAPI Collaborative Research Ecosystem is established to facilitate multidisciplinary, multi-institutional and international collaboration among universities, institutions of national importance, government organisations, research laboratories, industries, professional bodies, international organisations, think tanks and innovation ecosystems. The objective is to strengthen research excellence, promote knowledge exchange, jointly undertake strategic research, develop standards, generate policy solutions, facilitate technology transfer, build professional competencies and create national and global impact.
These are the categories of institutions with which BAPI may collaborate. Inclusion of a category does not indicate an existing agreement; current partners are listed under Research Partners and Collaborators.
See current Research Partners and Collaborators → Institute-Academia Partnership Programme → Institute-Industry Partnership →
Intent statementTo ensure flexibility, excellence, diversity of expertise and effective utilisation of national and international knowledge resources, every position within the three BAPI research ecosystems may be offered under one of the following engagement categories.
| Appointment category | Purpose | Typical engagement |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Appointed | Long-term institutional appointment with defined responsibilities, governance roles, research outputs, mentoring responsibilities and programme leadership. | Core institutional members |
| Honorary / Visiting / Guest | Engagement of eminent academicians, professionals, scientists, policy experts, industry leaders, retired officers and international experts for knowledge sharing, mentoring, advisory services, lectures, publications and strategic initiatives. | Invitation-based association |
| Empanelled / Project-Based | Engagement of experts for specific research projects, consultancy assignments, policy studies, evaluations, publications, standards development, committees, funded projects and specialised technical assignments. | Assignment or project specific |
The Bharat Assets Protection Institute™ may establish, appoint, recognise, engage, invite, empanel or collaborate with researchers, mentors, advisors, scientists, professionals, institutions, laboratories, industries, government organisations and international partners under any of the above ecosystems, subject to its regulations, policies, memoranda of understanding, project requirements, funding conditions and applicable statutory provisions.
Where collaborations involve research degree programmes, the award of academic degrees, appointment of research supervisors and other statutory academic functions shall remain the responsibility of the respective degree-awarding institution, unless otherwise authorised by the competent regulatory authority.
This framework provides BAPI with a research governance structure in line with established research organisations, while preserving compliance with the regulatory roles of universities and statutory bodies.
